A mugger has been charged with killing a 24-year-old bank clerk after she fell under a train during a robbery at a station in India.
Sapna Shukla lost her balance and fell under the train at Kurla station in Mumbai after being attacked by a teenager who tried to steal a gold chain around her neck.
A video of the incident shows the horrific moment when Miss Shukla fell under the wheels of the train in front of dozens of horrified commuters.
The Mumbai Mirror said the suspect, Rafi Malik, 19, was arrested at the station after he was chased and confronted by other passengers.
The CCTV footage shows him standing right behind the victim as she waits to board the ladies’ first class compartment.
Eyewitnesses said Miss Shukla lost her balance when she tried to confront Malik as he snatched at her chain from behind.
The Mumbai Mirror said he told police he tried to steal her chain because he was desperate for money so he could return to his village in Orissa, eastern India, having failed in a month-long search for work in Mumbai.
Malik has been charged with culpable homicide and attempted robbery.
Miss Shukla worked at a life insurance company and lived with friends.
Her father, BN Shukla, travelled to the city yesterday to collect her body. He sobbed as he spoke rhetorically to reporters: 'They say she lost her balance. Was it her fault?'
Mumbai is one of India's biggest cities and is a frequent destination for poor Indians from rural villages, seeking work.
In 2013 a 43-year-old woman died after she fell from a train in Rabale, near Mumbai, after being hit by a robber armed with a long pole.
