Woman swallows metal spoon, stays in body for days

The woman visited the hospital four days after swallowing the spoon to get it removed.

A woman in China accidentally swallowed a 13cm-long metal spoon while trying to remove a fish bone stuck in her throat. The woman visited the hospital four days after swallowing the spoon to get it removed.

The spoon was lodged in the woman's duodenum, first part of the small intestine, which doctors at Shenzhen Nanshan Hospital spotted after conducting an endoscopy and an X-ray. Dr Sun Tingji at the hospital's endoscopy department said, "As the spoon was in a horizontal position, we carefully adjusted it before pulling it out vertically," reported Latestly.com.

The woman underwent a procedure to extract the spoon which had caused swelling and erosion in her duodenum. "The woman was trying to retrieve a fish bone stuck in her throat when she accidentally lost her grip and swallowed the spoon," Dr Cheng Chunsheng said adding that she was discharged from the hospital following the procedure.

This is not the first time this happens. Last year, doctors in Urumqi in Xinjiang removed an eight-inch spoon from a 26-year-old patient's body, and in 2015, they removed a six-inch metal spoon from a woman who swallowed it while eating noodles.
