Diary of a convert: Marriage in Ramadan has been a holy experience

Alhamdulillah as we approach mid of Ramadan, Allah has blessed me yet another gift of marriage.

So just a day before, my state of mind was such that I could not sleep all night. Although I was positive and hopeful but both of us were very nervous because marriage is a big step. It is a big deal of course and I was very optimistic about this, because I feel I am lucky enough to meet my wife Laaiqah, who is very understanding, supportive and loving.

And Almighty Allah made it easy for us. The best part of Islamic marriage is that if done in the Sunnah way, it's so easy and simple. I, along with two of my colleagues who were kind enough to become witnesses for our marriage, and my fiancé reached the courts by 8:30am. I was thinking that the process will be a bit tedious and since I do not know Arabic, I was worried as to how will both of us manage, especially without our families.

But I was amazed at how smoothly everything happened and in about half an hour (which included me also queueing up to take token) we were declared man and wife! Alhamdulillah I got married in this holy month even though many people refrain from doing so, as they want big celebrations and feasting, which is not possible during the holy month of Ramadan.  But both of us are extremely happy that Almighty Allah gave us a chance to get married in this blessed month. So getting married, which itself is a sacred institution, in this holy month is amazing for me as it is yet another positive sign from God, to me.

So it is our first Ramadan together and the very first time that we are experiencing and starting on this journey of Islam. The spirit of fasting and getting married all at once is making us feel super blessed. Alhamdulillah for everything!

Marriage is a new phase of my life and I feel every adult man and woman should take this beautiful step. Many say that it is not for everyone but I want to say that it is something holy. It is from God. This is how he wants us to live our lives. He has made us in a way that we need one partner whom we can spend our life with, in the way we are ordained to. People should try and make this relationship work because together they can start a family which is yet another very beautiful aspect of life.

I am very happy about it because the feeling of having that one person in your life whom you can love, protect and expect the same from them, is special. And for the both of us establishing our relationship as Muslims is more meaningful now as we are proceeding into this life together with much better guidance.
