Salalah Airport will remain closed for another 24 hours, the Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) has announced.

Salalah Airport was intially meant to be closed to air traffic from midnight on May 25 for 24 hours. However, with Cyclone Mekunu nearing Oman's southern coasts the airport will now only be reopened on Sunday.

In a statement, PACA said: "Following up the development of the cyclone, which is currently affecting Dhofar, and to ensure the safety of airspace movement the authority has issued a notice to extend the closure of Salalah Airport to air traffic tomorrow Saturday, May 26, 2018, for another 24 hours."

Oman's national airline Oman Air also announced that all of its flights to and from Salalah will be cancelled, "Due to the closure of Salalah Airport all scheduled flights to and from Salalah stand canceled as of 26 May until further notice," the airline said in a statement online.

PACA added that it is coordinating with other international airlines in the Omani airspace affected by the cyclone movement by turning its routes to alternative routes according to the developments of the situation.
