Trial operations on the first railway linking Oman and the UAE are approaching steadily. The Omani Transport Minister expects these initial tests to begin in late 2027. This marks a very major step toward establishing cross-border rail services. The network will carry both passengers and freight between the two Gulf neighbors. Said bin Hamoud Al Maawali shared these encouraging timeline details with the media recently.
Connecting Industrial Hubs Across The Border
He noted that experimental operations should commence during the final three months of 2027. A joint venture company named Hafeet Rail is currently developing the 238-kilometer railway. This partnership involves Oman Rail, Etihad Rail, and the Mubadala Investment Company. The track will connect the Omani port city of Sohar with the UAE network. Trains will travel smoothly through Al Buraimi and Al Ain to complete the journey.
The project will seamlessly connect busy seaports, industrial zones, and logistics hubs. It creates a valuable new transport corridor to support trade between the nations. Construction teams are making excellent progress across Sohar, Al Buraimi, and Wadi Al Jizzi. Hafeet Rail reported in April that the project had reached 40 percent completion. Workers have shifted their focus from major civil construction to actual railway infrastructure.
Providing A Fast Alternative To Road Travel
The comprehensive route includes approximately 2.5 kilometers of carefully engineered tunnels. Builders are also constructing dozens of bridges, viaducts, and safe underpasses. The track navigates diverse terrain, including mountainous regions and busy urban centers. Engineers designed the passenger trains to reach impressive speeds of up to 200 kph. This will significantly cut journey times between Sohar, Al Ain, and Abu Dhabi.
The railway provides a highly comfortable and efficient alternative to standard road travel. Freight operations will also form a very key part of the completed network. The tracks will directly connect Sohar’s industrial infrastructure with the UAE railway system. This will greatly facilitate the rapid movement of goods between logistics centers. Both countries expect significant economic benefits from this collaborative infrastructure project.
