Three killed and five injured in school shooting in central Philippines

A tragic shooting at a school in the central Philippines left three people dead and five others injured on Monday, according to local police. The incident took place at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City, located in Leyte province.

Shooting Occurred During School Hours

Police reported that the shooting happened at approximately 9:00 am local time inside the school premises in Barangay San Jose, Tacloban City. The incident quickly prompted a large security response as authorities moved to secure the area and assist victims.

Suspects Identified by Police

Law enforcement officials confirmed that one suspect has been arrested, while another remains at large. Investigators are currently working to determine the motive and circumstances surrounding the attack.

Key details released by authorities include:

  • Three people were killed in the shooting

  • Five others sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals

Additional Security Deployed

The Police Regional Office 8 has deployed additional personnel to the school to ensure the safety of students, teachers, parents, and nearby residents. Authorities have also increased security measures in the surrounding area while the investigation continues.

Rare Incident in the Philippines

School shootings are relatively uncommon in the Philippines. One of the country's most notable recent incidents occurred in July 2022, when a gunman opened fire during a law school graduation ceremony at Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City, killing three people, including former Lamitan City mayor Rose Furigay.
