Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has launched two new budget smartphones, Redmi Y1 and Y1 Lite smartphones. With the new launches Xiaomi not only expands its sub-Rs 10,000 portfolio in India but also globally debuts a new smartphone series. The new smartphones are also first from the company to focus on selfie feature.

India is launchpad for new Xioami Y-series smartphones
With Redmi Y1 and Y1 Lite smartphones, Xiaomi has introduced its all-new smartphone series in the Indian market. India is the launch pad for the Chinese company's Y-series smartphones. It is still unclear which all countries Xiaomi will launch these selfie-focused smartphones in.
First selfie-centric smartphones from Xiaomi in India
The duo, Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite, are the first selfie centric smartphones from the company. The smartphone sport a 16MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture and 76.4-degrees wide-angle lens. There is also a soft flash which enables users to capture selfies even in low light. The front camera also comes with a beautification feature.
First Xiaomi smartphones to run MIUI 9 out-of-the-box
Redmi Y1 and Y1 Lite are the first Xiaomi smartphones to come with the company’s latest UI layer – MIUI out-of-the-box. The new UI brings brings features like split screen, improved notification dropdown menu, as well as icon animations, and smart photo-editing featuring object removal.
Specifications: Runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor
Xiaomi Redmi Y1 comes with a 5.5-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) display with Corning Gorilla Glass protection on top. It is powered by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor, clubbed with 3GB RAM and Adreno 505 GPU. The smartphone packs 32GB inbuilt storage, expandable via microSD card. Selfie lovers get a 16MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture, 76.4-degree wide angle sensor and a dedicated flash along with the Beautify feature. There is a 13MP rear camera with PDAF and f/2.2 aperture. It is backed by a 3,080 mAh battery.
May give touugh fight to Oppo, Vivo who dominate this segment
With the new Y-series smartphones, Xiaomi has entered the turf dominated by its home-country rivals Oppo and Vivo. Both the Chinese companies have slew of selfie-focused smartphones. However, almost none of them falls in the sub-Rs 10,000 bracket. The new Xiaomi phones are sure to create ripples in the segment may even lead to price war in the segment. Smartphones buyers can look forward to cheaper selfie phones from the likes of Oppo and Vivo in India.
Price and availability
The Redmi Y1 (3GB+32GB variant) is priced at Rs 8,999, while the phone's 4GB+64GB version costs Rs 10,999. The Redmi Y1 Lite is priced at Rs 6,999. Both the smartphones are Amazon Exclusive and will be available starting November 8. The smartphones will hit offline retail stores across the country in the coming days.
