Expat faces 7-year jail for Dubai mall parking fire that destroyed 11 cars

A driver - who has been arrested for allegedly deliberately setting fire in Dubai Outlet Mall parking lot that gutted 11 cars - will face criminal charges and sentenced up to seven years in prison, if convicted, said a law professional.

 

It is being treated as a case of arson.

The Dubai Civil Defence received report of the fire around 4:14pm on Saturday.

The Asian accused is currently undergoing interrogation and will be referred to public prosecution for further investigations.

It is suspected that the man set one of the cars on fire after he had a heated argument with its driver. The blaze spread and gutted 10 more vehicles. 

The Dubai Police arrested the suspect as he was trying to flee the country. 

Emirati lawyer Awatif Mohammed from Al Roowad Advocates said, "As per the UAE penal code number 3 for the year 1987, starting a fire in a building or a car is punishable by up to seven years in prison."

She added that according to Article 308 of the same law, if the fire caused the death of a person, the suspect may face death penalty.
