Indian restaurant in UAE closed over safety rule violations

Abu Dhabi closed down Anjappar Chettinad Restaurant in Al Khalidiya Street due to poor hygiene conditions

The Food Control Authority has closed down a popular Indian restaurant after it was found to have repeatedly violated the health and safety code.

The Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) issued the decision on Thursday to close Anjappar Chettinad Restaurant until further notice.

The restaurant is located on Al Khalidiya Street, and specialises in Chettinad and South Indian cuisine.

During routine inspections, the food outlet was found to have violated a number of the ADFCA’s health and safety regulations.

Thamer Al Qasimi, director of Communications and Community Services Department at ADFCA, said the restaurant had previously received a number of warnings from inspectors.

Despite repeated visitors by health and safety inspectors, the restaurant failed to make the necessary amendments.

“The food outlet was closed after it repeatedly failed to comply with the authority’s health regulations. A number of warnings were issued against the restaurant but the outlet’s managers still refused to make any changes and correct the mistakes,” said Al Qasimi.

He stressed that the food outlet will remain closed until the violations are rectified and amended, and will be allowed to reopen once it meets the authority’s health and safety standards.

The restaurant committed a number of health violations that jeopardised the public’s safety, which includes:

- Unable to maintain clean floors, ceiling and equipment

- Lack of maintenance with light fixtures

- Not properly storing, labelling food in refrigerators

- Not cleaning refrigerators properly

- Not following the procedures of pest-control

- Employing untrained workers

Report a complaint
Residents in Abu Dhabi were urged to report any violations carried out by food outlets by contacting the Abu Dhabi Government Contact Centre on the toll free number 800 555.
