Mother dies five days after son’s death in Ras Al Khaimah

A pall of gloom descended on Al Hudaiba area in the northern emirate following the tragic deaths of an Emirati mother and her son.

The 75-year-old mother breathed her last hardly a week after the death of her 33-year-old son, who was struck with a number of chronic illnesses since his birth.

Khamis Al Maliki, the son, died last Wednesday and the broken-hearted mother died five days later, as she fell into deep depression and sorrow, according to relatives.

A huge crowd of people attended the funeral of the 75-year-old woman on Monday and they recounted the unique story of a family and the mother-son relation.

Mohammed Al Maliki, a relative, said: "He was a type-2 diabetic and used to take insulin on a regular basis. A year ago, he suffered acute kidney failure and his sister donated one of her kidneys to save his life."

The kidney transplant was successful and that had brought happiness to the family as Khamis recovered from his illness, he added.

"However, he developed a critical heart problem and could not make it despite an intensive treatment he took in one of the hospitals here. He died quite unexpectedly, which shocked the entire family, especially, his mother."

He added that the mother never stopped lamenting about her dear son who died so young, which led to a heart attack. She was buried in a grave adjacent to her son's at the Hudaiba cemetery.

Khalil Ibrahim, a family friend, said the mother used to give extra attention to him and the son also showered love on her and was extremely respectful to his mother. "He never left her alone and used to console her whenever she raised her worries about his health."

Saeed Ali, another friend, said: "So many people who did not have any relation with the family took part in her funeral after coming to know about their sad story."
