School students and pilgrims traveling for Hajj and Umrah are now officially included. The update was announced at the launch of the country's annual awareness campaign. The campaign focuses on influenza and seasonal respiratory diseases for the 2026–2027 season.
Protecting Vulnerable Community Members
Officials stated vaccination is especially important for groups at risk of severe complications. It is also highly recommended for people who care for those in risk categories. The expanded target list now includes pregnant women and children aged six months and above. Elderly individuals, healthcare workers, and those with chronic illnesses remain on the list. Previously, the ministry's guidance centered on a slightly narrower set of groups.
Including school students addresses how quickly seasonal flu can spread in classrooms. Pilgrims face similar risks of exposure to respiratory illnesses in large travel crowds. Health authorities hope this update will effectively reduce transmission across the entire community. The seasonal flu vaccine remains available to anyone aged six months and older. Saudi health authorities also mandate that pilgrims get the vaccine before traveling.

Vaccinating school students against influenza currently remains a strong health recommendation. Officials hope the expanded list will encourage more parents to vaccinate their children. The nasal spray option is considered particularly helpful for children with needle anxiety. The annual awareness campaign is a collaborative effort across multiple UAE health authorities. Emirates Health Services, Sharjah Health Authority, and Dubai Health are all participating actively. The campaign encouraging flu vaccination for priority groups will run until March 2027.
