Heights of Anti-semitic Crimes in the Uk

Reaching new heights, anti-Semitic crimes in 2017 alone have been recorded at 767. The number reflects a rise in crimes against Jews in the UK by 30%as compared to last year, in the same period. A Jewish charity, keeping records of hate crimes for the last 33 years, says that this is the highest level since the record started.

According to the Community Security Trust (CST), since April 2016 the rate at which the hate-crimes are taking place is very alarming. This year alone, in just 6 months, 80 violent crimes were reported; includingconstant verbal abuse, vandalism, and hate campaigns. Social media contributes to a fifth of these insensitive incidents, such astargeted campaigns around Neo Nazi and anti-Semitic theories.

The Jewish communities in the UK are largely present in Greater London and Greater Manchester, where74% of these crimes are conducted.

While the British police forces are gathering all the information they can via security guards and other reports, there hasn’t been a concluding statement about the cause of the recorded statistics of 2017. Interestingly, the statistics have riled up the ongoing controversy around the accusations on the police as well as the CPS, that theyare “betraying” British Jews.

Home Secretary, Amber Rudd has said that the Hate Crime Action Plan by the government is working towards improving reports, and the government is giving out £13.4 million for the protection of Jewish sites. She added that all the endeavors of the UK government are towards stamping out the hatred.
