A strict food safety crackdown in Maharashtra turned a civil servant into a celebrity. Tukaram Mundhe currently heads the state’s Food and Drug Administration. He uses graphic inspection videos and strict enforcement to protect local consumers. Mundhe is a 51-year-old veteran bureaucrat with more than two decades of government service. He previously drew national attention for his excellent handling of the Covid pandemic. Now, the BBC has highlighted his highly aggressive restaurant inspection drive. His team posts videos showing cockroaches, spoiled produce, and severe hygiene violations.
Protecting Consumers From Imitation Products
These shocking videos quickly turned his press briefings into viral social media reels. He now commands more than 3.8 million highly active followers on Instagram alone. Since May, his department has carried out over 4,000 strict culinary inspections. They suspended 300 licenses and issued more than 1,000 formal improvement notices. The campaign targets everyone from exclusive members-only clubs to celebrity-endorsed brands. Mundhe insists officials must enforce food safety laws regardless of a business’s political influence. The regulator recently banned the production and sale of analogue paneer in Maharashtra.
Gaining Massive Public Support
Consumers must receive genuine paneer made directly from milk, not cheap non-dairy substitutes. The ban protects the market for authentic milk producers and local dairy farmers. It also prevents restaurants from deceiving customers with lower-quality imitation ingredients. Tackling India’s food safety challenge remains an incredibly daunting task for any regulator. Officials must police a vast market containing countless street vendors and informal suppliers. Consumers have largely welcomed the speed and transparency of Mundhe’s aggressive actions.
