New cases add to hair chopping mystery

Panic among women in Delhi and neighbouring states increased on Tuesday with at least 15 more victims reporting that they found their hair mysteriously chopped. While the women had no clue to how they lost their tresses, in one case in Mathura district a victim reported seeing a woman with "big teeth" approaching her before she lost consciousness.

In Delhi, police said that a 50-year-old felt a headache coming on and rested on Tuesday. Her daughter-in-law later saw the woman's hair on the floor. "I am still shocked and scared," the woman told police. The cops registered a case under the Indian Penal Code, invoking Sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 352 (punishment for assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation).
In Mathura, however, despite reports of four similar cases, police said no complaint had been filed. Swapnil Mamgain, senior superintendent of police, Mathura, instead charged anti-social elements with trying to create panic. In Sisram Nagla village, a shaken 50-year-old claimed to have lost her hair while asleep on Tuesday and had to be admitted to hospital. In Bharokar village, Guddi talked of a woman with "big teeth" approaching her as she did the dishes on Monday. When she regained consciousness, she found her hair lying nearby. Similar happenings were reported from Shahpur village in Kosikala and Oal in Farah.

In Gurgaon and adjoining areas, police received reports of 10 women suffering the mysterious assault. "We are investigating and appeal to the people not to create a panic," said Sumit Kuhar, DCP (Crime), Gurgaon. A resident of Sector 4 asserted that she lost her braids on Monday night. In Gurgaon village, Kamlesh, 30, had to be taken to hospital after she sensed someone pressing on her throat and snipping off her locks. Neha, 13, found her hair in tatters on Tuesday while getting ready for school and had to be given medical aid. In Vishwakarma Colony, a 32-year-old housewife too was horrified to find her hair falling in bunches in the morning.

In Joniawas village in Farruknagar, Kamlesh Devi, 50, was one of three victims. She left home to relieve herself on Monday night and returned to find her daughter shrieking about her shorn head. Bimla claimed to have been hit on the neck around 10pm on Monday and then found her hair falling to her feet. Vidya Devi, 60, suffered a similar fate.

There were reports also from villages in Sohna. One incident took place in Sahjawas village on Monday night, the second in Khedla village around 10am on Tuesday, and the third at Sancholi village in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, three men dressed as women tried to enter a house in south-west Delhi's Kanganhera on Tuesday. Villagers caught them and handed them over to the cops.
