Six Nepali die, 16 injured in Malaysia due to alcohol poisoning

Six Nepali nationals died and 16 Nepali nationals were injured from alcohol poisoning in the state of Selangor in Malaysia, the Nepali Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) confirmed here on Wednesday.

The ministry said in a statement that six Nepali nationals, who fell sick after consuming alcohol in Malaysia, died during their treatment at Sungai Buloh Hospital and Kajang Hospital based in Selangor.

"Sixteen injured Nepali nationals are now receiving treatment at Buloh, Kajang, Klang and Banting hospitals in Malaysia," the ministry stated.

The Nepali Embassy in Kuala Lumpur immediately contacted local police authorities in Selangor following local media reports that the Nepali nationals were among other foreign nationals who suffered from alcohol poisoning on Monday night.

On Tuesday, diplomats at the Nepali Embassy also visited local hospitals to take stock of the Nepali nationals following the incident.

"The local police have been launching investigation following the incident," the Nepali Embassy in Kuala Lumpur said in a press statement.

Nepali Foreign Ministry officials said that the dead bodies of the Nepali nationals will be brought back home once the post-mortem is over in Malaysia.

On Tuesday, Malaysian newspaper The Star reported quoting the local police authorities that the dead men comprised Malaysians as well as foreign nationals in the incident that took place Monday night.

The newspaper reported that the victims consumed the alcohol, which was purchased from various shops in the Klang Valley, the wider area in Selangor state that surrounds capital Kuala Lumpur.
