It's amazing how humans can weather the most dangerous situations in life. We may not know it, but we are all born with a survival instinct. It's only in some of the most precarious situations that we confront our instincts and the story of this Indonesian teen is proof.
The 18-year-old lad named Aldi Novel Adilang had one of the world's most lonely jobs, that of a lamplighter on a rompong - a wooden raft with a hut on top that's lit at night to attract fish.
But one day, Adilang found himself in a sticky situation when in mid-July strong southerly winds had caused high waves, resulting in the anchor rope rubbing until it broke.
According to a CNN report, Adilang said that he had communication with friends on another raft for a week but after that was alone.
Adilang, however, powered through and survived 49 days adrift at sea after the wooden fish trap slipped its moorings. He stayed alive by catching fish and drinking sea water.
"I was on the raft for one month and 18 days. My food ran out after the first week," said Adilang. When it didn't rain for days, "I had to soak my clothes in the sea, then I squeezed and drank the water".
