Utkal Express Derailment Caused By Staff Negligence

According to a probe report on the Kalinga Utkal Express, the derailment killing about 20 people and injuring 90 has been blamed on staff negligence. On its way to Haridwar from Puri, the express train went off the tracks on Saturday near Mussaffarnagar (UP), where fourteen coaches went slamming and crashing into each other and houses in the vicinity.

As per official data, out of the 586 train accidents in the last 5 years, 53% of them were due to derailments. A report suggested that the staff had been involved in unscheduled repair. The fish plates that hold the rails together were not fixed correctly and the gap kept widening until it gave way under the coaches traveling at speeds of 100km per hour.

Rail Minister Suresh Prabhu, said that the responsibility of this crash will be fixed basis the “prima facie” evidence. Action was taken soon after the reports had come out, where officers were told to go on leave until further notice and some were suspended.

Railway board member (engineering) Aditya Mittal, northern railways general manager RK Kulshreshta, and the Delhi divisional railway manager RN Singh are the officials that are on ordered leave, while three more are suspended.
