A U.N. investigation has revealed that Egypt and North Korea have an agreement in which Egyptian businessmen bought rockets from North Korea. The deal is said to be worth millions of dollars and the rockets have been bought to strengthen Egypt’s military.
The businessmen tried to be as discreet as possible in their dealings but after a warning message had been sent to Cairo, from Washington D.C. regarding a vessel carrying arms, the U.N. and Western diplomats started investigating into the matter.
When the ship entered Egyptian waters, customs officials boarded the ship and found more than 30,000 rocket-propelled grenades which have a market value of about $23 million hidden under bins of iron ore. In the history of sanctions against North Korea, this is said to be the largest seizure of arms.
The matter is of grave importance as this comes at a time when the U.N. has imposed tough economic sanctions on North Korea, and this latest illegal transaction will give North Korea some financial help as it continues to test its nuclear weapons.
U.S. officials and diplomats added that this was one of the main reasons in a series of acts of defiance from Egypt that has forced President Donald Trump to delay a grant of $300 million in military aid to Egypt.
