5 Chilling Facts About The Texas Shooter

2. State Denied His Gun License, But He Still Legally Bought A Gun

The biggest question about Kelley was how he was legally able to obtain the weapons he used in the massacre. He was denied his gun owner’s license by the state of Texas, but law enforcement determined that he legally obtained the Ruger AR-556 used in the shooting from an Academy Sports & Outdoors store in San Antonio, Texas. According to police, he had no disqualifying information in the background check conducted as required for the purchase by state law.

“Current law, as it exists right now, should have prevented him from being able to get a gun,” said Texas Governor Greg Abbott following the shooting. Investigators are still trying to determine how he passed the background check.

1. Friends, Classmates Describe Him As A Creepy Outcast

Kelley’s Facebook has since been taken down by FBI investigators, but before then, former friends and acquaintances of Kelley posted their thoughts on the shooter.

“He was always talking about how people who believe in God we’re stupid and trying to preach his atheism,” wrote Nina Rose Nava, a former student at New Braunfels High School, where she and Kelley both attended.

Christopher Leo Longoria replied to her post with, “I removed him off FB for those same reasons! He was being super nagtive [sic] all the timd [sic].”

In an interview with the Daily Mail, other former students described Kelley as an outcast, but not a loner. He grew up with friends but had a falling out with many of them over the years and especially since his discharge from the Air Force.

One former Facebook friend described their falling out: “It’s scary to know this psychopath has been in my house. I can’t believe I was friends with this guy and I literally would stay the night at his place when we were kids.”

“I ended up distancing myself from him in high school after he got in an argument with me in school and he tried punching me several times. Dude was crazy man.”
