Iran has successfully test-fired a new medium range ballistic missile on Friday. The 2,000-km range Khorramshahr missile which can cover almost much of Middle East, has also unveiled same day in public for the first time during a military parade which is attended by President Hassan Rouhani.
The move comes just after the US President Donald Trump threatened to withdraw from the multilateral agreement on Iran’s nuclear program in his address to the annual session of UN General Assembly this week. Trump has also signed a bill in August that imposed mandatory penalties on those involved in Iran’s ballistic missile program and anyone who does business with them.
Addressing the parade, Rouhani said that Iran would not stop its missile programme and continue to strenhthen its defense and military capabilities. He added that the missile programme is intended purely for defensive purposes and Iran will never invade another country.
Khorramshahr is Iran’s third missile with a range of 2,000 kilometers, noted a report in Mehr News Agency. Weighing more than a ton, it can carry several warheads, the report added.
The military parade in the capital Tehran marked the 37th anniversary of the invasion of Iraqi army under Saddam Hussein into Iran on 22 September 1980 which resulted in a war that lasted till August 1988. Parades were conducted across the country which seen the participation of all divisions of Iranian armed forces.
