The Worst Mass Shootings In US History

Stephen Paddock was responsible for the worst mass shooting in modern US history in which he killed 58 people who were attending the Route 91 music festival. Paddock shot at the crowd from a room at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.

Mass shootings have increased in the recent past and public gatherings like offices, malls, schools and train stations have become a target for these deranged killers. Here’s a look at the worst shootings witnessed in the US.

 

Las Vegas, Nevada – 58 dead

A 64-year-old man opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino where almost 22,000 people had gathered for the Route 91 music festival. The gunman shot at the crowd through a window which he managed to break open. 58 people lost their lives and over 500 people were injured in the shooting. Paddock was found dead in his hotel room when the police entered his hotel room.

Orlando, Florida – 49 dead

Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old man who had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State opened fire inside the Pulse nightclub on June 12th, 2016. SWAT officers and the gunman were involved in a tense three-hour standoff before he was killed. 49 people were killed in the incident.

Blacksburg, Virginia – 32 dead

On April 16th, 2007, a 32-year-old man, Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people in two shootings in a dorm and a classroom in Virginia Tech campus. Cho killed himself after he went on the rampage.

Newtown, Connecticut – 27 dead

Adam Lanza, 20, killed 20 school children and 6 staff members at the Sandy Hook Elementary School before shooting himself dead. Nancy Lanza, his mother, was found shot dead at her home.

Killeen, Texas – 23 dead

Another shooter who went on a rampage before shooting himself was George Hennard who opened fire at Luby’s Cafeteria in Texas on October 16th, 1991. 23 people lost their lives while another 20 were wounded.

San Ysidro, California – 21 dead

An out-of-work security guard killed more than 21 people in a McDonald’s restaurant on July 18th, 1984. James Oliver Huberty was later shot dead by a police sharpshooter.

Austin, Texas – 16 dead

The only state on this list to feature twice, Charles Whitman killed 16 people and injured 30 others when he opened fire on his wife and mother and then went to the clock tower at the University of Texas at Austin and shot at people.
