Italy To Be Under Further Lockdown After Death Toll Rises, Hospitals Suffer, Says PM Giuseppe Conte

Italy Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has put his country under further lockdown after its death toll has shown a steep rise. The country will be lockdown beyond April 3, with schools, colleges and universities closed. Movement of people within the country has also been restricted in this time of emergency.

“The total blockade will go on. The measures taken, both the closure of (public) activities and the ones concerning schools, can only be extended,” Conte told Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera on Thursday.

The Italy PM's comments further confirmed the speculations of the government that they would extend the national lockdown further as the country's situation worsens.

Under the rules of the national lockdown, the residents of Italy can only go out to get food, medicines and grocery. For the moment all shops have been asked to remain close till March 25, the date is expected to stretch further. Meanwhile, Italy’s tally of coronavirus cases and deaths jumped on Wednesday; 2,978 have now died from coronavirus in Italy, 475 more than Tuesday.

While confirmed COVID cases are increasing every day around the world, Italy alone has  35,713 positive results for coronavirus.  Meanwhile, in Italy's Lombardy area, which is the epicenter of coronavirus in the country, the hospitals have reached a point where they cannot promise treatment of virus cases.

Medical facilities in Lombardy will “soon” be unable to help new coronavirus cases, the region’s Governor Attilio Fontana said on Wednesday.

“Unfortunately the numbers of the contagion are not falling, they continue to be high. We will soon be unable to give a response to those who fall ill,” news agency ANSA reported.

“Stay at home: if you don’t understand that we’ll have to be more aggressive" he said.

As per the current data in Worldometer, a total of 2,20,879 coronavirus cases have been reported. The death toll stands at 8,988, while the number of recovered patients at the moment are 85,782.
